Listen to DSPI’s Professor Jamie Lachman and Dr Isang Awah give practical advice for parents

Two new short BBC Ideas videos featuring researchers from the Department of Social Policy and Intervention (DSPI) have recently been published as part of a collaboration between the BBC and the University of Oxford's Social Science Division on evidence-based parenting.

Both videos translate findings from DSPI’s parenting research into practical, accessible advice for families. They are grounded in evidence from Parenting for Lifelong Health and the Global Parenting Initiative, and highlight the wider work that DSPI researchers and partners are doing to generate and scale evidence-based parenting support globally.

Professor Jamie Lachman: ‘A 5-min-a-day parenting tool that really works’

The parenting tool that really works (and only takes 5 mins!)’’ explores the importance of spending one-on-one time with your child and features Professor Jamie Lachman, Professor of Child and Family Global Health at DSPI.

Professor Lachman explains how a simple period of focused, one-on-one time can be a valuable tool for strengthening relationships between parents and children – and how the approach is backed by extensive international research.

" Professor Lachman

‘Dedicated one-on-one time is not plucked from the air. It is based on over 15 years of our research on parenting programmes from across more than 40 countries.’

Dr Isang Awah ‘Taking a Pause: A simple way to parent like a pro (and stay calm!)’

‘A simple way to parent like a pro (and stay calm!)’ features Dr Isang Awah, Head of Advocacy at the Global Parenting Initiative, sharing a practical technique that parents can use during challenging moments: taking a pause before responding to their children.

Dr Awah explains how recognising our own reactions and creating a brief moment of space before responding can help parents approach difficult situations more calmly.

" Dr Awah

'Being a parent is so challenging. If you feel something rising up inside, simply give yourself a few seconds to stop, breath in and out until you're calm, and then respond.'

Dr Awah
